PADI Staff Members Give Thanks to PADI Pros Who Changed Their Lives

Being grateful is good for your health – it’s not us saying it but the science. Unfortunately, most of us are better at recognizing the negative aspects of our lives and experiences. That may be why some scientists and self-help experts advise us to keep a gratitude journal, as recognizing and acknowledging what we are grateful for may take a dedicated effort, but it is totally worth it. Today, our staff is here to give thanks to the PADI Pros who changed their lives.

We hope this article inspires you to reach out to your loved ones, dive buddies, and instructors to say “Thank You” and make their day!

In 2015, two PADI Course Directors, Nicola Liddell and Jason Sockett from The Dive Centre UAE in Dubai, made a lasting impact on PADI Regional Manager Annie Halloran’s journey in the diving world. Reflecting on her experience, Annie shared, “Thank you so much to Nicola and Jason, who brought me through all my PADI Professional certifications – ultimately having such a big impact on my career path.”

Under their guidance, Annie advanced through her professional certifications, from Divemaster to IDC Staff Instructor, gaining invaluable skills and confidence. Nicola, especially, stood out as a role model – “a successful, driven female presence in the diving industry” – and both Nicola and Jason helped Annie see diving as more than a sport, but a passion to pursue. Their mentorship opened her eyes to the possibilities within diving and inspired her to follow a career that she is deeply committed to today.

Under Marlies’ mentorship in the Divemaster course, April experienced the dedication and passion that defines a true PADI Professional. Remarking on her time with Marlies, April shared, “Marlies set the standard for me for what it means to be a PADI Professional. She is a passionate educator and an incredible role model. I hope I have made her proud.” Marlies’ inspiring leadership left a lasting mark on April, who has since strived to embody the same commitment to excellence in her own work within the diving community.

In 2016, PADI Regional Manager Cody Brooks started studying under Davis Graham at the Texas Dive Center in Houston, Texas – a meeting that would shape her professional journey in diving. Davis trained Cody through several key certifications, from Rescue Diver to IDC Staff Instructor, recognizing her potential from the start. Beyond training, Davis introduced Cody to the industry’s larger network, encouraging her involvement with DEMA (the Diving Equipment & Marketing Association) where she volunteered on committees, eventually contributing to the creation of the Wave Maker Award. Thinking about Davis’ lasting influence, Cody stated, “I am forever grateful to Davis as my mentor and friend for his continuous support and encouragement many years later.” Davis’ mentorship left Cody with not only skills and knowledge but also a strong professional foundation in the diving industry.

For Divine Montiero, PADI Marketing Consultant, diving has always been more than a profession; it’s a family legacy, thanks to her mother, Anne Montiero. Anne, who began her diving career as a PADI Divemaster, went on to become a successful scuba retail shop owner, embodying resilience and dedication in a male-dominated field. Remembering her mother’s influence, Divine told us, “My mom has always been my role model in diving. She showed me that dedication and passion can overcome any challenge. Her belief in me has inspired me to pursue my goals with confidence. Love you, mom!” Anne’s unwavering support and example have inspired Divine to chase her own ambitions in the diving industry with the same strength and conviction.

Reflecting on their impact, Erica shared, “I am eternally and daily grateful to these two – they not only introduced me to the amazing underwater world and sport of diving, but encouraged me and showed me the way to become a PADI Pro and see the world.” Inspired by their passion and enthusiasm, Erica found her path in the diving industry, shaping a career she continues to love and lead to this day.

In 2017, PADI Instructor Development Consultant Nathan Prendergast trained under the guidance of Grace Williams at Underwater Vision in Utila, Honduras, where he completed his Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) and IDC Staff Instructor certifications. Grace’s commitment to high-quality training left a lasting impression on Nathan, who credits her mentorship for shaping his path in the diving industry. Nathan said, “Her dedication to delivering high-quality training has stuck with me to this day. Without the guidance and trust she showed me, I would not be where I am today!”

Back in 1996, Matt Wenger, now a PADI Regional Business Advisor, began his professional dive journey in the Dominican Republic under the mentorship of Marco Zubrod at First Class Divers. Marco’s influence extended well beyond the courses, impacting Matt’s career trajectory in profound ways. “My former boss and mentor, Marco Zubrod, was a key figure in my life and I need to thank him for all that he has done for me,” Matt tells us. Marco’s support and expertise were instrumental, laying the groundwork for Matt’s enduring success in the dive industry.

In 2015, Sarah Morlock, PADI Marketing Communications Specialist, embarked on her Advanced Open Water Diver course in Nusa Penida, Indonesia, where she had the privilege of training under Yvonne Ng, now a PADI Course Director. Yvonne’s guidance went beyond the basics of diving – she instilled in Sarah a lasting sense of confidence and inspired her as a strong female role model in the industry. “She helped me realize what I was already capable of while encouraging me to learn new, useful skills,” Sarah recalls gratefully. Yvonne’s dedication and encouragement made her a standout mentor, and the skills and self-assurance Sarah gained during that course continue to influence her career and perspective in diving.
