There Are No Barriers in Scuba Diving, as Proven by One Instructor & Adaptive Diver

Scuba diving has a unique way of opening doors to new worlds, offering a sense of freedom and discovery that is almost unparalleled. For Nic Carapanagiotu, the underwater world became not only a passion but a pathway to achieving his goals, despite being a thalidomide survivor. This means Nic was born with two short arms. Driven by a fierce determination, Nic’s path to becoming a PADI Pro is a story of resilience and the power of adaptive techniques in scuba diving, proving time and again that barriers can be overcome with the right mindset and support.

Nic’s diving journey began in 1998 when he earned his first certification. Over the years, he logged more than 1,000 dives, diving primarily in a specially adapted dry suit. Nic’s love for the underwater world led him to explore some of the most breathtaking dive sites, but he always sought new ways to challenge himself and grow as a diver.

In 2013, on a liveaboard trip to Truk Lagoon, Nic crossed paths with PADI Course Director Simon Hotchkin. Making the most of this fortuitous meeting, Nic embraced the opportunity to advance his skills. It was a decision that would change the trajectory of his path as a diver.

With a strong support system and tailored adaptive strategies to hone his skills, Nic quickly began to flourish. Using the PADI Adaptive Techniques framework, Nic worked closely with Simon to perform course skills in ways that worked for his unique needs while adhering to PADI Standards.

Nic’s hunger for progression was unrelenting. He earned multiple PADI Specialty certifications and became a Rebreather Diver, yet he constantly sought opportunities to grow. In this pursuit, he and Simon devised an adaptive strategy for Nic to become a PADI Instructor

The PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) required creativity and dedication. Nic’s training included much practice, problem-solving, and adapting traditional methods to suit his abilities.

In November 2023, Nic reached a monumental milestone — he successfully completed the PADI Instructor Examination (IE), earning his status as a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor. This is a testament not only to Nic’s perseverance but also to Simon’s unwavering support and the effectiveness of adaptive techniques in creating opportunities for divers of all abilities.

Since earning his Instructor certification, Nic has continued to thrive. He has achieved additional Instructor ratings in specialties, such as Deep Diver and Enriched Air (Nitrox), and his sights are now set on becoming an IDC Staff Instructor. As a valued member of Stellar Divers’ instructor team, Nic has proven that physical limitations are no match for passion, ingenuity, and a supportive community.

Nic’s success highlights the transformative power of adaptive techniques, which are designed to make scuba diving accessible to everyone, regardless of ability. By focusing on individual strengths and finding alternative ways to achieve goals, the PADI System of Education empowers divers to overcome barriers and experience the joy of diving.

For Nic, these techniques were a gateway to a life-changing journey. His accomplishments remind us that scuba diving is not just about exploring the ocean but also about discovering our own potential. For those who may be considering diving as a means of healing, growth, or adventure, Nic’s journey is also proof that with the right mindset and resources, anything is possible.

Whether you’re a seasoned diver or just starting your underwater journey, Nic’s example challenges us all to dream bigger, work harder, and never give up on what we truly want to achieve.
